HENDERSON WAITAKERE TOASTMASTERS CLUB

Club 7761, Henderson, New Zealand

August, 2008

Humorous Speech competition on the 12th of August, 2008.

Guests, Guest Judges and Speechcraft course members witnessed a demonstration of humour and versatility. The club was complimented on the number of entries and also the range of topics entered. Table topic and Humorous Speech achievers included Carolyn James, Kay Hammond and Chris McGarvey. The humorous speech topics provided great pleasure to the audience for their entertainment value. Winners will progress to the area competition on the 26th of September. A video was taken on the night by Brent Maagdenberg; his outtakes and ghost ins were cool school entertainment.

Another generation beckons.

Christine Allan and husband have some great news !!!!!!
My husband and I are pleased to announce that we had a baby boy on Wed 7 August at 9.40 am.
His name is Anthony Te Puarangi Allan (named after his daddy and great-great grandfather respectively).
He was born by caesarian section as he was in a flexed breech position.
He weighed 3.88 kg (or 8 pounds 9 ounces) and was 53 cm long.
Baby and mummy are both doing well.

Club Visits.

el Presidente, Kay Hammond has been proactive in visiting other clubs. Here is her report.

From el Presidente
I’ve been el Presidente of our club for one month now. I am excited to be part of the energy of our great committee. The support and advice is fantastic. We have had 6 members attend the officer training and I feel that this shows real commitment to each other and to our club. They say that a club’s culture often reflects its leader. My hope for my term as president is to work together and inspire new and experienced Toastmasters alike to achieve our goals. I see so much potential in our members and I would be honoured to be a part of helping them to realise it. I can see the club reflecting our energy, support and humour. This is going to be a great Toastmasters year for us all.

Round, round, round, round I get around! - Club Visits
After competing in the district competition this year, I truly understood that Toastmasters is even more than what I had experienced in my own club. I wanted to visit other clubs and meet more Toastmasters. So I’ve been out visiting! Have you been out visiting? Let us know!

North Shore, Division F, Area 5
I was impressed by how many members of this club were down at the district conference. I wanted to know why this club was so committed, I had to visit them. I attended two meetings. They meet on the Tuesday evenings that we don’t. They offer the opportunity of meeting at 6 for dinner before the meeting at 7:15. They had a good attendance and ran their meeting well. If you are over on the Shore on a Tuesday evening, stop by this club for a great night.

Arawa, Division D, Area 5
On July 10th I visited the Arawa Toastmasters club in Rotorua. Finding the arts centre was a problem for me, so I turned for help in a craft store. I figured such arty people would know of the goings on in arts centres. It turned out that the shop was staffed with Toastmasters! So a quick call confirmed the meeting time and directions.
Arawa club meets fortnightly on a Thursday evening. Their venue was a good sized room in a cozy Arts centre. On this visit there were about 8 members present. They gave me a really warm welcome; I felt like I was a member of the club already. One of their quirky events was Caine’s Cardy Corner. Caine the Toastmaster was renowned for wearing cardigans and he had something to say about each of them. This was his last presentation in his Cardy Corner, and I think everyone will miss it. Never mind, he beat out his father to take speaker of the night. As master evaluator I was given the honour of presenting ribbons for the best of the evening awards. One of their awards is best humourous moment. I had to award that to the Toastmaster who introduced a speaker’s topic on beards. She said all that she knew about beards was that she hoped never to have one. I really enjoyed my visit to Arawa Toastmasters, and will stop by again next time I’m in town.

Silver Service, Division A, Area 6
The Silver Service put out an open invitation for people to attend their Black Tie Dinner on July 21st. This is an annual event where the old and new committee change over. The booked out at Estragon Restaurant. Despite a misleading map (Why am I always having trouble with directions?) I arrived in time. A few days prior to the event they had a speaker withdraw so I stepped in to fill the spot. I didn’t actually have a speech written when I volunteered, but it was a great way to banish the procrastination!
Over 30 Toastmasters turned out in their finery. The welcome was instant and warm. I even got to meet our Division F governor! It was a wonderful experience to do a speech and then have dinner arrive. Evaluations were followed by dessert. Chocolate cake and Toastmasters is a great mix. Of all the great ideas for a Toastmasters club, this definitely one I’d like to see at our club! If you’re visiting clubs in Auckland, put this one on your map!
